Investing in Artists

Our Aim

The People’s Theatre Company was set up to present the best new theatre productions and develop the best new theatre talent. Our award winning shows have launched some of Britain’s most promising careers and our free training and apprenticeship schemes help more and more aspiring artists and workshop leaders into work every year.

Programmes

The People’s Theatre Company runs two main programmes for aspiring artists. Both are free and both aim to graduate participants onto paid work either with ourselves or other organisations. The effectiveness of PTC programmes in helping artists to develop their skills and progress their careers has been recognised by the support of bodies including The British Council and Arts Council England.

To apply for a position simply email us with the programme title in your subject heading, a brief CV attached and a cover note explaining why you want to take part.

  Workshop Leader Training Programme

Leading drama workshops is a useful source of supplemental income for jobbing theatre practitioners and acquiring the necessary skills is therefore one of the smartest things you can do.

The PTC have inductions throughout the year for aspiring drama workshop leaders. Training takes place in venues across North Surrey. Both beginners and more advanced levels are welcome so no previous experience is necessary.

The People's Theatre Company provided me with a solid training and support system that allowed me to develop my skills and experience as a workshop leader. They gave me a platform from which I could progress in my area of interest and build upon my existing knowledge of drama education.
Ruth Williams

My mentor’s organizational skills were a great example for me to follow in the future.
Leticia Molera

  Career Development Programme

People's Theatre Company productions have a reputation for excellence. They give performers, technicians, designers and writers the chance to work alongside experienced professionals and showcase their talent, while picking up practical, real world skills to supplement their existing knowledge and training. PTC productions play at premiere venues such as The Northcott, The Lowry, Salisbury Playhouse and The Yvonne Arnaud and the majority of artists who work with us move directly into further work either with ourselves or other organisations.

Past participants include Drew Mulligan, star of the Palme D'or nominated film Tulse Luper's Suitcase, Louise McCarthy, who played Lisa in the West End's Mama Mia, Imogen Butler-Cole, now an internationally recognised director and Steve Dorsett star of Fidelio's Abba Mania world tour. The PTC has also helped aspiring Theatre Administrators, Designers and Producers, such as Inga Hirst of Dissensemble, to create independent projects or start their own companies.

I've just found out that I got Dinah in Starlight Express, so I wanted to email you because I thought you'd like to know! Thank you so much for helping me - just wanted to let you know that your hard work paid off!
Leanne Garretty – Actor, The Witch’s Bogey.

I got my first West End lead after working with The PTC. It was the most inspiring thing I have ever done.
Louise McCarthy - Actor, The Witch's Bogey.

The PTC has helped me grow and improve as a performer, especially where my confidence, stage presence and singing is concerned. The shows are fantastic and it is a great company to further your career with after leaving drama school.
Helen Crosse – Actor, Bink.

When The PTC asked me to direct Head I was an actress who hadn’t had much directing experience. After thinking long & hard I agreed to do it. I loved the process as it gave me great scope for creativity & insight. I've gone on to direct theatre in India & Thailand & to pursue a hugely rewarding career in this field. I recommend taking a leap of faith when given the chance - it's bound to pay off!
Imogen Butler Cole - Director, Head.

Having co-designed The Witch's Bogey and designed costume for Bink and The Giant Whizpop I had the professional experience and confidence I needed to make the first step into working in film and tv. I am now working in the art department for Nickelodeon.
Sam Deane – Designer and Costume maker, The Witch's Bogey and Bink and The Giant Whizpop.

Working with the People's Theatre Company is inspiring, exciting, exhausting, but most of all great fun. The combination of talent, enthusiasm and sheer joy that the people's Theatre Company bring to their work makes it a real treat.
Drew Mulligan – Actor, Head.

I got so much work after Head and doing The Witch’s Bogey helped me with the coaching and directing side of things that I wanted to develop.
Erika Footman – Actor, Head / Musical Co-Director, The Witch’s Bogey

I had a really good experience working on Bink and it was unusual and nice to work with such a supportive company.
Soraya Hussain - Costume designer, Bink and The Giant Whizpop

I want to thank The PTC, and Steven Lee in particular, for all their help and support. I learnt a huge amount and I have the company to thank for getting my next placement.
Nicola Morris - Stage manager, Bink and The Riddle of The Sphinx

The support of The PTC has been essential to my development as a director. By assisting Steven Lee on a professional theatre production I learned an incredible amount about working in theatre. This experience in turn has influenced and helped me now that I am directing my own production which will be shown at South Hill Park in May. My new project has been made possible with the help of The PTC and made all the more easy due to the continued relationship I have with them, as I know they will be there to support me as I begin my theatre career. The assistance I have had from The PTC has allowed me and other young theatre professionals to establish a company dedicated to creating new works of theatre through devising. Since finishing my MA in theatre directing I have longed to work in a devising ensemble but thought that this would take years to establish and gain funding for. With help and support from Steven Lee and The PTC my career as a theatre director is continually improving. They have given a young person a very important start in a very hard industry and I cannot thank them enough for giving me this amazing opportunity so early in my career.
Inga Hirst - Assistant Director, Bink and The Giant Whizpop
